How Does Hypnosis Work?
When something new happens to us, we remember it and learn a particular behavior in response to that circumstance. Memories stored in our brains hold the original physical and emotional reactions that occurred when the given memory was first formed. Each time similar events occur again, the physical and emotional reactions attached to the memory are repeated. These reactions might be inappropriate or unhealthy. In hypnotherapy, I will guide you to remember the event that led to the first reaction, separate the memory from the learned behavior, and reconstruct the event with new, healthier associations.
During hypnosis, a person’s body relaxes while his or her thoughts become more focused and attentive. Like other relaxation techniques, hypnosis decreases blood pressure and heart rate. In this relaxed state, a person will very at ease physically yet fully awake mentally. In this state of deep concentration people are highly responsive to suggestion.
There are several stages of hypnosis. The process begins with reframing the problem, becoming relaxed, then absorbed (deeply engaged in the words or images that I present); dissociating (letting go of critical thoughts); responding (complying with the suggestions); and returning to usual awareness and reflecting the experience.
CAN ANYONE BE HYPNOTIZED?
Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. You enter into some form of hypnosis several times every day. Perhaps you can remember a time when you were driving and completely missed your turn-off only to realize it some time later. This “highway hypnosis” is an example of a naturally occurring trance.
ANYONE can easily enter hypnosis providing they have the following two things:
1. You must want to be hypnotized, (no one can hypnotize you against your will).
2. You must not have any fears or misconceptions about hypnosis or how it works.
CAN HYPNOSIS HURT YOU?
In over two hundred years of recorded hypnosis history, there is no documented case of anyone being hurt with hypnosis. It can only be used for good. If anyone tried to give you suggestions against your morals, values, religious beliefs, or anything that you feel strongly about, you would instantly emerge from the hypnotic state of relaxation on your own.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SESSION WITH A HYPNOTHERAPIST
During your first session with a hypnotherapist, you will be asked questions about your medical history and what condition you would like to clear up. After that a thorough explanation of how hypnosis works. You will then be directed through relaxation techniques with a series of mental images and suggestions intended to change behaviors and alleviate symptoms. You will be taught the basics of self-hypnosis and will receive a CD which enables you to recreate the feelings that were experienced during the session and reinforce the learning on your own.
