USES OF MEDICAL HYPNOSIS--SOME EXAMPLES OF WHAT CAN BE DONE WITH HYPNOTHERAPY:
Since 1958, hypnosis has been recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA) as a legitimate treatment modality for a wide range of medical and behavioral problems such as:
Anxiety and Stress: Stress and anxiety are the greatest friends of chronic pain, medical issues and disease. Over $3,000,000,000 is spent annually for stress related medical issues. Through hypnosis you will begin to feel a lifting of everyday stresses and anxieties, thereby relieving you of unnecessary pain or illness.
Cancer: Develops when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. Although there are many types of cancer, they ALL start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells. Hypnosis can be used alleviate pain and reduce the negative affects from chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Hypnosis is an effective aid in dealing with the emotional aspects of this illness.
Children: Children show their response to stress, change, grief and loss in many different ways. For some schoolwork may begin to slide. Your child may lose things or steal them. The child may have headaches or stomachaches. Children often develop fears of doctors or dentists. Bedwetting may become a problem. Particular health problems like diabetes asthma, and hay fever may be exacerbated. Your child may not be able to put words to the overall feeling of anxiety or tension. Children are great discoverers. With limited life experiences, they are hungry and open to new learning. They enjoy responding to new ideas that are presented in a way they understand. Their openness and imagination make them good subjects for hypnosis. Hypnosis is a good tool to strengthen your child’s confidence in using natural gifts and talents. Simple techniques can be taught so that your child learns ways to help his or herself in school or performance or competition. Using these tools can make childhood and adolescence an easier place for your son or daughter. CBS news program, “Saturday Early Show” concluded that children tend to respond better than adults because they are more in touch with their imaginations.
Depression Associated with Chronic Illness: A depressed patient does not seem to heal or bounce back from illness like the patient that is mentally healthy. Hypnosis can help the depressed patient regain their will to be happy which will help them through their recovery.
Diabetes: is a condition in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone which enables the body to convert sugar into energy. If not properly treated, the disease can be fatal. There are two types of diabetes: Type 1- This type requires daily injections for life support. Type2- this type occurs most often as an individual grows older. However do to poor nutrition and lack of exercise, more and more type 2 is being seen in children and adolescents. The treatment for type 2 is control of blood sugar by oral medications. Hypnosis can be effective for children, adolescents and adults, whether type 1 or type 2, and suggestions are given to maintain better control, resulting in fewer complications of diabetes. Being a type 1 diabetic myself, I am well aware of the particular issues which can be so troublesome for all diabetics of all ages.
Pain Management: I can help you experience the effects of hypnosis induced pain reduction. Then you will be taught self-hypnosis so that you can create the reduction of pain yourself. Individual results vary depending on the origin of the pain. Sometimes the pain is eliminated, or reduced, or reduced to the point where less medication is required, leading to a better quality of life.
HOW PAIN IS RELATED TO STRESS
Stress and pain have a lot in common. They often feed on each other. Simply stated, pain causes stress and the stress causes more pain, and so the cycle goes. Chronic stress becomes chronic pain and chronic pain cause chronic stress. Stress itself is not a problem. It is a normal response, called “fight or flight”, which happens when faced with some tension-filled situation. The issue comes when the stress is unrelenting. The usual body defenses eventually have no way to “recuperate” in order to assist you when you face challenges.
FEARS AND PHOBIAS
One of the primary reason people seek therapy is the need to deal with fear reactions. The range of such problems is quite extensive, ranging from simple, annoying “hang-ups” to full-blown phobias that may be a part of serious mental illness. Fears are not necessarily bad in fact, they can be highly valuable if they serve useful purposes such as instilling caution in driving or being prepared for emergencies. But when a fear causes the alteration of a normal lifestyle, creating intense and irrational behaviors that pose a threat to a person’s well-being, it merits close attention. Hypnosis can help by reaching the subconscious mind where the fears are, and helping that part of the self understand that time has passed and there is no reason to continue to be fearful.
FERTILITY
Studies have now confirmed that psychological and emotional blocks can create infertility issues. There may be subconscious fears around pregnancy, labor, childbirth, hospitals, medcal treatments, loss of independence, questions about their husband's ability to be a good father, or a fear that the baby would be a threat to the marriage. Hypnotherpy can help women identify and process emotional issues within the subconscious that might be interfering with conception.
HOW THE PAST RELATES TO YOUR CURRENT LIFE
The past is uncharted territory for many of us. We remember small things: a smell, an evening, playing with your pet. Loaded into the past are countless events, experiences, wishes, fantasies, and memories. Many of our adult reactions to life come about as a reaction to something that happened to us earlier. Many of our fears and quirks have their roots in the past, though we might not be aware of the particular incident which ser the fear into motion. Often we were too young to make much sense of the experience. Taking time to search out the past can give us clues to our current fears and keys to change in perception and attitude. Simple hypnotic techniques can bring to light memories long since forgotten. While in a relaxed state, you can look at past events from the vantage point of both the child and the adult. You may discover the roots of things that have long bothered you. You’ll be able to move forward to do the things you want to do today, no longer hindered by the past.
MEMORY
The problem isn’t with your memory as much as it is with your ability to recall what you have remembered. Everything said to you, everything that has ever happened to you is stored in the subconscious. Recalling the information is a matter of finding the right material in your memory bank. Even when you really concentrate and make the effort to remember a person’s name, very often it is quickly gone and you’re left fumbling, hoping for a clue. The more you fumble, the worse it gets. Hypnosis helps you have better overall recovery of what you hear. Through suggestions, you can teach your body to relax and be more receptive. Your ability to recall information will be enhanced.
SELF HYPNOSIS
A lot of people don’t realize that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis and the therapist is simply the facilitator. In fact, you can put yourself into hypnosis without a hypnotist. Hypnosis is a method of boring your conscious mind so it relaxes and stops thinking. In my practice I regularly teach my clients self-hypnosis because using it between sessions helps compound the suggestions and aids in reaching the desired goal faster. I give my clients CD’s for this purpose. In hypnosis, your conscious mind is like an obedient servant that is told what to do. The subconscious mind doesn’t think, reason or rationalize, it only follows instructions. Conversely, your conscious mind needs to be relaxed and quieted so it won’t argue against what you are instructing your subconscious mind to do. Hypnotic suggestions are effective because they bypass the conscious mind’s natural resistance to change and to reprogram the “computer” we call upon the subconscious to permanently effect these changes.
SMOKING CESSATION
Hypnotherapy is a positive way to stop smoking. Stopping smoking could be much easier than you think. The stop smoking session will include hypnotic relaxation techniques, positive affirmations and suggestions. Using hypnosis, you can deal with all of the emotional aspects of giving up smoking. At the end of the session you will be given a tape or CD to take away so that can continue to reinforce the suggestions through the self hypnosis process. Stopping smoking should not be difficult or unpleasant. Granted nicotine is a difficult substance to go without when you are giving up smoking, but after a few days, it is out of your system. Most ex-smokers agree that quitting smoking for the first few days is difficult but VERY ACHIEVABLE! Perhaps you can imagine how proud you are going to feel and how positive you will be about yourself. Hypnotherapy has enjoyed a high success rate with smoking cessation. I can help you to accomplish this very attainable goal.
WEIGHT CONTROL
Being overweight isn’t mainly about what we’re eating, it is more about what’s eating you. It’s about old habits, and the feelings and emotions that trigger you to eat or snack even when you are not even hungry. Some people eat to gain relief from anxiety or grief, to deal with anger or fear, or other emotional issues. Hypnosis can provide access to some of the root causes for your overeating. For some people, understanding the cause is enough information to begin a lifelong change in eating habits. Food is only the distracter for those feelings and emotions that you do not like. Once these feelings are resolved, then food is no longer as attractive. As a result, you will get rid of the weight permanently and start feeling good about yourself. Your self-esteem and confidence are crucial factors in making lifelong change. The ability to imagine yourself at a healthy weight is an important start. Hypnosis can reinforce good self-talk so that you continue to build on strength rather than battling feelings of deprivation. With an emphasis on feeling healthy, hypnosis can increase you desire for food with appropriate nutrition. Most of the changes take place in your thinking and attitudes toward food. They can happen easily and naturally, through the use of hypnotic processes. As televised on “Dateline” the study indicated that hypnosis and hypnotherapy for weight loss was the only method that proved to be successful. It works!
